# Grib and QGIS

Thanks to the [MDAL](https://www.mdal.xyz/) library, integrated in QGIS since the 3.2 release, it is possible to use this new data type. An extensive guide of this data is in the [official QGIS documentation](https://docs.qgis.org/3.4/it/docs/user_manual/working_with_mesh/mesh_properties.html).

Find and download these data is not so easy: there are many online resources, ([ECMWF](http://apps.ecmwf.int/datasets/), [NASA](https://disc.gsfc.nasa.gov/)) but none of them is really user friendly.

The [OpenGribs](https://opengribs.org/en/) Open Source software allows with a simple UI to select an area and download the data: Basically this software is sending requests to the servers that return the data.

We were looking for a simpler solution directly integrated in QGIS.

During the QGIS HackFest of Padova in February 2019, thanks to Enrico Ferreguti, we developed the [QGribDownloader](https://plugins.qgis.org/plugins/gribdownloader/)plugin.

Here a very short guide:

1. Search and download the `QGribDownloader` plugin:

    ![Install QGribDownloader](https://www.faunalia.eu/user/pages/02.dev/07.QGribDownloader/1_download.png)
2. Zoom to an area and click on the plugin icon ![Icon](https://www.faunalia.eu/user/pages/02.dev/07.QGribDownloader/icon.png) to open the settings panel:

    ![QGribDownloader Settings](https://www.faunalia.eu/user/pages/02.dev/07.QGribDownloader/settings.png)
3. You can now select many different options: meteorological model, variables to to download, etc. Click on `Download Grib` and select the folder where to save the data: once downloaded the data are automatically loaded in QGIS
4. Use all the standard symbology option of QGIS to create the meteo map:

We can make many enhancements to the plugin, just [write us](mailto:info@faunalia.eu).

Another example from [our blog](https://www.faunalia.eu/en/blog/2019-09-03-qhurricane): the evolution of the Dorian hurricane. Cool isn't it?!
